KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 31 — The Jelutong Landfill Site (TPSJ), which has accepted construction and demolition waste and excavated soil for more than 40 years, will cease operations from November 30.
The Penang Island City Council (MBPP) said the closure is to allow rehabilitation work at the site.
From December 1, those disposing of construction debris or excavated soil are advised to use the Integrated Solid Waste Management Centre (ISWMC) in Ampang Jajar, Central Seberang Perai (SPT).
MBPP said the disposal fee is RM15 per metric ton for permitted waste generators or transporters.
Legal action may be taken against anyone disposing of waste without approval, under the Local Government Act 1976 (Act 171), the Roads, Drainage and Building Act 1974 (Act 133), and the Penalties By-Laws for Offences under the Roads, Drainage and Building Act (Penang Island City Council) 2020.
Offenders under Act 133 can face up to five years in prison, a fine up to RM50,000, or both. For ongoing offences, fines may rise to RM500 per day.
The state government began phased rehabilitation of the 34-hectare landfill in 2020 through PLB Engineering Berhad, with an allocation nearing RM1 billion.
