GEORGE TOWN: The Air Itam–Tun Dr Lim Chong Eu Expressway Bypass (Package 2) has reached 87 per cent overall physical completion, marking a significant milestone in one of Penang’s most important infrastructure projects.
State Infrastructure Committee chairman Zairil Khir Johari said, as of Nov 22, three additional beams were successfully launched, each measuring 2.2 metres in height, 2.25 metres in width, 39.45 metres in length and weighing 120 tonnes.
“With this latest installation, a total of 269 out of 329 beams have now been launched, representing 82 per cent completion of all beam units required for the project.
“The remaining 60 beams will be launched section by section, depending on substructure readiness, weather conditions and site safety requirements,” he said today.
According to the updated schedule, the entire beam launching phase is expected to be completed by March next year.
Zairil said the Penang Infrastructure Corporation (PIC) and the project contractor were committed to maintaining strict safety standards, ensuring high construction quality, and fully adhering to Public Works Department specifications as works progress toward completion.
The Air Itam–Tun Dr Lim Chong Eu Bypass is designed to provide a smoother traffic alternative for thousands of daily commuters, reducing congestion and improving connectivity between the central and eastern parts of Penang Island.
With the project moving steadily toward completion, the state government anticipates significant long-term benefits for mobility, economic activity and overall liveability once the bypass is operational.
