Penang Street Food Fest in Bangkok a huge hit with food lovers

BANGKOK (Bernama): The one-day Penang Street Food Festival 2024 held in Bangkok here on Saturday serves as a platform for Malaysian entrepreneurs in Thailand to expand their business.

Malaysian ambassador to Thailand, Datuk Jojie Samuel, said there are many Malaysian entrepreneurs in Thailand, especially in the food and beverage industry, who operate small restaurants.

“Besides promoting Malaysian food, this festival serves as a platform for the entrepreneurs to expand their business,” he told Bernama after officiating the festival at the Old Siam Plaza.

The inaugural festival, which attracted 27 vendors, is jointly organised by the Malaysian embassy and Kelab Thailand Malaysia in Bangkok.

The festival offers a wide range of Penang food, including char koay teow, nasi kandar, Hokkien mee, asam laksa, curry laksa, rojak and nasi dalcha.

Besides these much-loved Malaysian dishes, nasi lemak, satay, mee wantan, roti canai, ghee tosai, mee rebus, lor mee, mee kuah daging, curry mee, curry fish head, pan mee, chicken and beef rendang, otak-otak, traditional cakes, chee cheong fun, muah chee, cakwe (pa tong ko), kek lapis, cendol, cincau, bandung, teh tarik, gula apong, snacks, food products and bamboo craft are also offerred.

A Thai, who wished to be known only as Pun, 54, said she really enjoyed the food, especially nasi kandar.

The 54-year-old, who works in Nok Air, said she has never been to Malaysia but she has heard from her friends that Malaysian food is delicious.

“Today, I tasted many Malaysian dishes, including curry mee, satay and nasi lemak. I really enjoyed the Indian curry rice (nasi kandar) and milk tea (teh tarik),” she said, adding that she is planning to visit Penang soon.

Apart from the food, guests who attended the festival were also treated to a live cooking demonstration from Pearly Kee, a renowned chef from Penang, as well as dance performances showcasing Malaysia’s culture and tradition. – Bernama
